Amrit Snan — Shahi Snan Dates & Full Schedule

The royal "nectar bath" — the precise celestial moments when bathing in the sacred Godavari is believed to grant moksha. Three main dates. Two sacred sites. One timeless faith.

The Meaning

Amrit Snan — literally "the nectar bath" — is the most sacred bathing ritual of the Kumbh Mela. It is also called Shahi Snan, the "royal bath", because the Akhadas — the ancient orders of sadhus and saints — lead the procession to the river in a grand procession with elephants, horses, chariots and gold-tipped staves.

According to tradition, at the precise astrological moment of an Amrit Snan, the waters of the Godavari turn momentarily into the very nectar of immortality. A single dip in that moment cleanses the karma of countless lifetimes.

Their energy purifies the water, and after they have taken their dip, the waters are opened for all pilgrims. To bathe at that time is to receive the highest blessing.

The Three Amrit Snan Dates — 2027

Mark these three sacred days in your mind and heart. They are the pillars of the great Mela.

First Amrit Snan
2nd August 2027 (Monday)
Ashadh Somvati Amavasya
An Amavasya (new moon) falling on Somvar (Monday) is in itself a deeply powerful day for spiritual practice. This day marks the grand opening of the gates of salvation. Akhadas process to Ramkund, Nashik.
Second Amrit Snan
31st August 2027 (Tuesday)
Shravan Amavasya
The month of Shravan is deeply auspicious, dedicated to Lord Shiva. An Amavasya during this month holds special significance. The most attended of the three royal baths.
Third Amrit Snan
11 & 12 September 2027 (Sat & Sun)
Bhadrapada Shuddha Ekadashi
11 Sept — Vaishnava Akhadas at Ramkund, Nashik  ·  12 Sept — Shaiva Akhadas at Kushavarta Tirtha, Trimbakeshwar. The closing royal bath that seals the Sinhastha.

Two Sacred Hearts of the Mela

The Nashik Sinhastha is unique among the four Kumbhs — it is celebrated across two distinct sacred sites, honouring both great traditions of Sanatana Dharma.

Nashik — Panchavati (Ramkund)
The main bathing ghat where Lord Rama himself bathed during his exile. This is the sacred ground for the Vaishnava Akhadas — followers of Lord Vishnu.
Trimbakeshwar — Kushavarta Tirtha (~30 km)
Home to one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the source of the Godavari river. This is the sacred ground for the Shaiva Akhadas — followers of Lord Shiva.

Understanding this duality is key to planning your pilgrimage, especially for the Third Amrit Snan where the two Akhada traditions bathe on separate days at separate sites.

The Ritual

  • Pilgrims rise before dawn and reach the ghats by 3–4 AM on Amrit Snan days.
  • The Naga Sadhus and Akhadas process first in fixed seniority order — Shaiva and Vaishnava Akharas separately.
  • Householder devotees bathe only after the Akhadas have completed their snan.
  • Offerings of flowers, milk, and diyas are floated on the river.
  • The bath is followed by darshan at Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga or Kalaram temple in Nashik.
  • On 11 Sept — Vaishnava Akhadas bathe at Ramkund, Nashik; on 12 Sept — Shaiva Akhadas bathe at Kushavarta Tirtha, Trimbakeshwar.
